Phonetic Correlates of Lexical Neural Tone Within Mandarin Two-character Compounds in Four Full Tones Contexts

چکیده

In Mandarin two-character compound words, the syllable of second rightmost constituent may be neutralized, which in combination with first full tone as to form a neutral trochee prosody pattern [Strong-weak]. Because (character writing form) can carry more than one tone, it is possible that has both and form, semantically different. This study focused on prosodic features disyllabic compounds across four tones contexts. Our goal was investigate acoustic contrast their counterparts. For this purpose, we selected 80 minimal pairs compounds, i.e., 巴掌 /ba1zhang0/ (clap) 手掌 /shou3zhang3/ (hands), constituents present identical syllabic structure /zhang/ contrastive patterns (in example, (Tone 0) vs. 3)). One-hundred sixty target words were embedded within short carrier sentence recorded by native speakers Mandarin. The correlates paired syllables examined using Praat R-studio, including duration, pitch (F0) intensity, averaged curve are represented through point-to-point graphical comparisons. results indicate two main findings. Firstly, confirmed phonetically reduced tone. Secondly, shares some common counterparts intensity level, whereas duration range reveal barely any significant differences results, onset value mainly dependent offset preceding except for Tone 4. suggest phonetic interaction between constituent, lends support assumption comparison tones, predicted basis like offset.

The Phonetic Specification of Contour Tones: The Rising Tone in Mandarin

This paper investigates the phonetic specification of contour tones through a case study of the rising tone in Mandarin. The patterns of variation in the realization of the rising tone as a function of speech rate indicate that the specification of this tone involves targets for the slope of the f0 rise, the magnitude of the rise, and the alignment of the onset and offset of the rise. These tar...

Mandarin Tone 2 Coarticulation: Phonetic or phonological?

Tone processes in Chinese languages can be identified as phonological or phonetic. In the literature, this distinction is often made by referring to them as either tone sandhi (phonological) or tonal coarticulation (phonetic). However, while it is unchallenged that certain processes (e.g. Standard Mandarin Tone 3 Sandhi) belong to the phonological camp, some other tone processes that are consid...

Domain specificity of lexical tone perception in early infancy: lexical tones versus musical tones

In the current study, we tested the perception of pitch variations in early infancy from a domain general perspective for two auditory domains: speech and music. 4-month-old Dutch infants were tested on their discrimination of a musical relative pitch difference, a musical absolute pitch difference, and a Mandarin lexical tone difference. Our results showed that the infants failed to discrimina...

Mandarin Lexical Tone Recognition: The Gating Paradigm

Research on spoken word recognition in Indo-European languages often does not incorporate prosody. In Mandarin Chinese, however, lexical prosody is used extensively and has been shown to affect word processing in previous studies. The present study uses the gating paradigm to investigate the processing of the four Mandarin tones as well as the role of the initial segment in processing. Duration...

Categorical perception of lexical tones in mandarin-speaking congenital amusics

Previous research suggests that within Mandarin-speaking congenital amusics, only a subgroup has behavioral lexical tone perception impairments (tone agnosia), whereas the rest of amusics do not. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the categorical nature of lexical tone perception in Mandarin-speaking amusics with and without behavioral lexical tone deficits. Three groups of lis...
